I don't know, this is sounding a little too paranoid. I understand the ego of an artist, but this is such a lack of professionalism--why would any teacher at MSM or NEC (who ask you to rank) really hold this against a kid, when the kid can't get through the application without following instructions? I have never heard of that process working against an 18-year-old student who has no choice but to do what he is told.
