I have spoken to opera singers who found themselves in a political nightmare at their schools because of controlling manipulative teachers. There are teachers who are notorious for having favorites in their studios - to the detriment of many others. Some of these singers left the school rather than try to switch studios. I have not talked to any professionals who don't echo that advice - establish contact with the teacher and choose the school based on the teachers. Don't assume that because a school has a wonderful reputation that you will get a wonderful teacher.
