I would also recommend studying with the private teacher at the school and get a relationship going with the dept. head while you are there.

I know one person who went to Oberlin college as a freshman, not thinking that a conservatory would be right for him. He took lessons with the jazz guitar teacher Bob Ferazza all year and transferred in to the conservatory for his sophomore year. This was a particularly good move because in the jazz dept. at Oberlin, the private teachers make the final call on admissions.
