Music is a basic ingredient for us. My daughters would feel naked without music (and their iPods) 24/7. The older one is at Brown University (math concentration), is an accomplished musician & dancer, and never received a grade below an “A” though high school. Her younger sister is in the same academic boat, and is one of the top few sopranos in our State Chorus. Studies show a positive relationship between music & learning.

I just had my Physical on Friday. My physician went to Brown too. He majored in music composition.

At work, I have music on all day – unless I’m on the phone. In fact, among the first things you might notice as you enter my office is the pair of B&W 803 speakers that rise almost 4 feet off the floor.

Seems to me it’s an individual choice. Some people are distracted. Others can’t manage without it. You should be able to decide what works for you.

Of course, from your first sentence, it sounds like this argument isn’t really just about music & your iPod.
