tiffw: when you ask it, I assume it is in a social setting. But, an institution that receives federal funds must be very careful. The race questions that are asked on the application forms are supposed to be for statistic purposes and not used in the vetting process. Also, asking the student about their ethnic background is bad enough. But, asking them if they are -----, when they really are some other ethnicity, is wrong. It creates undue anxiety in the student for something they cannot change.
