I'd be careful about saying that the tests are graded on a curve. The standard is uniform, but the questions that assess those standards vary in difficulty from test-to-test, so the score needed on each individual test in order to reach those standards will vary as well.
For instance, back in 1985, you used to need 84 points (out of 108) on the AP Calculus AB exam in order to earn a 5. As recently as 2003, you used to need 67 points on the same exam to earn that same 5. What that suggests is that the AP Calculus AB exam has gotten more difficult over time.
