kimfred, your son is going to excel wherever he goes, and you and your husband are doing all the right things. You are being supportive in every way - financially ($10,000 is great!) and emotionally (your support and encouragement got him where he is) and passing on important financial lessons about making tough choices (staying out of deep debt is so important!). Roger_Dooley made some great suggestions. In addition, your son might contact the department directly to explain his situation and express his great desire to attend and ask about paid research assistant jobs. He could look into the possibility of being an RA as a junior and senior (maybe even a sophomre) - many of them get reduced or free dorms and that would cut down on expenses significantly. GOOD LUCK!
