| as for airports, theres pros and cons for each. a lot of people work in sanfran, so there traffic going out of it (so you'd run into that going from sanfran to palo alto) but i think it might be a little closer to stanford than san jose. i personally would choose san jose, it really is not that far, and iver never experieced that bad of traffic from san jose to stanford.
as for things you should do... norcal beaches do NOT have warm water... but they can be pretty. san fran is a fun city, it has a cool zoo. if you're willing to drive a bit the monterey bay aquarium is very cool. down town palo alto (right near stanford) has some good food like this person above me mentions.
