| Many state schools allow you to apply for spring admission (I think NYU does that too). In the meantime, your son can either study abroad, work (if you can make a case with family finances), take credit courses FOR NOW at a community college, or do some meaningful volunteering work.
I think SUNY Stony Brook accepts applications until tomorrow. It's pretty easy to apply online.
