| Laylah and Panhandlegal--This was the parental hurdle I had to get over when I decided that j-school was okay. The bottom line is, there's no one best way to do it. Students with degrees in other fields get jobs; students with journalism degrees (especially from respected programs) get jobs. We met a fairly well-known journalist who did not have a journalism degree and doesn't believe it's necessary. On the other hand, we know that his boss (who is even more well-known) has a degree from Mizzou. As in many fields, it's what's between your ears that counts. My S convinced me that he wanted the structure, focus, peer group, and internship opportunities that came with journalism school. He will also probably have a minor in another field. (You'll see this debate in past CC threads. I don't want to resurrect it because it's one of those questions with no clear answer!) |
