If by "general ed" courses, you mean core classes that some schools require you to take, then Hopkins does not have "general ed" or core classes. Students take classes to complete their major, and then what we call "distribution credits." And coolguy is right, writing sems is not a general ed class, it's a major here, and the department is very reputable.
