It is impossible to go to auditions for Broadway often with the schedule these kids have with school all day (most auditions are on weekdays). They are not allowed to miss a studio class more then twice per semester at CAP. So, hardly any audition outside of school on a regular basis (not counting summer stock auditions). A couple might but again, could not with regularity. My D does not as she wants to stay in school all four years. A couple friends have attended auditions and been cast and have taken leaves. I could cite several examples (although truly the majority do not do this). One recent example is a friend/classmate from CAP21 who is also in my D's a capella group who took this year off as he was cast in the LA cast of History Boys. He is back from that job but not in school for the remainder of the year (though is back in her a capella group) and he was just cast (but is not missing classes for auditions!) as the swing in the upcoming Glory Days for Broadway. So, some kids do this but they have not gone to LOTS of auditions as that is impossible to do. But if they are cast, they must take a leave (or leave all together) from Tisch. Many have taken a leave and have returned to finish out school. My child doesn't want to even audition as she doesn't want such a situation to arise since she is there to go to school now and train and will leave auditioning for after graduation. She is more in the majority I believe. I must admit that on several occasions her peers have pushed her to audition for Spring Awakening and cannot understand why she won't while in school. So, obviously not all feel the same. But the fact remains that you can't audition much while in school, and if that is your true aim, it might make sense to not be in school at this time. Her aim currently is to train. I would not pick NYU with the goal of "I'll be in NYC and I can audition all the time!"
