also, i'm not sure what you mean by "amateur work." if this means picking up a camera with auto settings and pointing and shooting then maybe i should explain some more.

photography is part art (composition, lighting, subject matter, etc) and one part technology (knowing and adjusting camera settings such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO speed, focus, etc. in order to achieve the desired effect). once you have the technology part down and you sort of have a pretty good understanding of how a camera works (you'll probably start with film which, surprisingly, isn't always harder than digital) you can work more on taking pictures and improving on your techniques.
