Honestly, Purdue weeding out ~15% of their student body is a consequence of admitting a lot of slackers and then letting them sink or swim. It wont be that difficult, likely, for someone who can get into much more selective schools.
As for the quality of the programs, I would ignore the statement from your neighbor as it, as far as you know, anecdotal and potentially baseless. Just look at xjis's statistics. Sure Purdue is known for its engineering department (which helps a crapload in USN rankings), but UVa is just an overall solid school with a great program to offer as well. |
