| Being a talent agent or a Hollywood executive is a nice dream to have, however, it is one that is very hard to have realized. I know Ari Gold on Entourage makes it seem easy, but the bottom line is if you want to work in a talent agency out of college, be prepared to work in the mail room (And at that, you'd be lucky to get that position - as a prerequisite is often a college degree and you're competing with a lot of people).
Sports management, even with a degree in sports management, is just as difficult a field to break into, if not more so because there aren't the "mail room" programs that most talent agencies offer. I had a brief brush with it when I interned with a firm that represents numerous NBA, MLB, and other Professional athletes, and even with that experience I've had no luck getting internships with any other talent or sports representation firms (And getting that first internship was hard enough as it is, and was completely due to luck and timing).
Not to sound discouraging, but just wanted to put things into perspective. If it is truly what you want to do, then certainly pursue it. Great writing and English skills are key, and so are great communications skills (which unfortunately, you either have or don't). |
