I agree, I tried to be a bit more realistic with my approach to selecting schools and went with some safeties and reaches. Ultimately, the admissions anxiety wasn't too bad, and I ended up happy with my acceptances and final decision...
For the H-Y-S-prestige-or-die type of students, well, I agree with you there... No need for that type of self-induced torture.
