| Posting here as a mom of a Long Island HS Junior. Our G dept posts "scattergrams" of student who apply (in a program called Naviance) From our HS, accepted students averages:
Binghamton: 95.36, 1287 Big university 12,000
Geneseo: 94.67, 1276 Smaller LAC 6,000
Stonybrook: 92.14 1198 Kiplinger listed as most unhappy students top ten
New Paltz 90.72 1151 Newsweek listed 25 hottest schools to watch
New Paltz is gaining attention because, as my S GC says, everyone on LI applies to Binghamton. They either want to go, or they are using it as a safety and want to go Ivy. From LI, Geneseo is too far and in the middle of nowhere. Stonybrook is depressing and too close. New Paltz is a cute town and the surroundings are pretty and it is not too far. The school, according to the Newsweek article is always updating itself. Purchase is a conservatory of the arts. Auditions make it seem selective, but it is not strong for the Lib arts. Alot of the SUNY schools are becoming more selective just because the pool of applicants is growing so quickly. They are a good deal, especially in a worsening economy. |
