tyr is right, classes usually open up during add/drop. And you can always talk to a professor in person and ask to be added. My d has had success with this approach. Also, students usually avoid the 8:00 a.m. sections, so sometimes, those sections stay open.

Helpful hint: During her first two years, my d prepared her ideal fall and spring schedule and then let some of the spring courses serve as her backup should she not get her first choice fall classes. I think she only had to switch a fall and spring class one time. Since the first year or so is primarily core curriculum classes, this is very doable.
