Try Barron's 2400. It says a few smart things that I ended up internalizing and utilizing while testing. Other prep books are geared toward students who score slightly above average.

To answer your questions, you'd be better off just buying the College Board's Blue Book and then taking those tests. The PSAT and the SAT are very similar-- the SAT is slightly harder-- so it wouldn't hurt to just practice for the SAT!
