Okay, so you have to find the area of circle B - circle C.
(Completely forget circle A... it's there to confuse you).

Consider Circle B.
Radius: 2.5 units.
So, Area: (2.5)²∏ = 6.25∏ or 25/4∏

Consider Circle C.
Radius: 2 units.
So, Area: (2)²∏ = 4∏

Now subtract C from B.
25/4∏ - 4∏
= 2.25∏ or 9/4∏.

Makes sense?
(Sorry for the ellipses instead of the circles... )

As for the 5/4, it had this variable 't' in it... and there was... OH I remember it.

^ I think that's what it was... but I might have manipulated the variables/numbers here and there. But basically that's what it was...
