Honestly, though I believe your concerns are real and genuine, I think a more common path is the one hinted at by Northstarmom: Choosing to excel in a different field when your parents are intimidating. Sometimes when people talk about a gift or a profession skipping generations, this is actually what they're getting at. Both my parents were scarily smart med school professors; my brother, sister, and I all chose media related fields instead.
