According to the Coordinator's Manual, your coordinator indeed should have stopped you, as you noted.

The closest thing I can find on the list of irregularities is for "Pencil or inappropriate ink color on free-response section." The instruction is "Advise the student that scoring of the free-response section will not be affected." It also says that no irregularity report needs to be filed for this action to take place, so I'm guessing you should be OK.

But you should keep in mind that this is just my interpretation from reading through the Coordinator's Manual. There should be a number in your student pack, where you can call the College Board and ask them to be absolutely certain.
