Not to open another can of conspiracies, but I found this post on the class of 2012 blog:

The University of Chicago - Class of 2012 Blog: Students who were admitted from the waiting list

So we know a few students have gotten off the waitlist. I'm guessing, like JHS, that these students were special-situation students.
