When I was in CC (until two months ago) I took the broadest range of math and science. For example some schools require linear algebra but others dont. You need to be in the best shape (as a candidate) at the time of applying. Since you are interested in top programs and knowing that the transfer rates for these programs is very low, you need to make your self a competitive candidate for each school that you apply to by taking a broader credit hours which may result in excess of credit hours (like in my case), but it will provide you an equal opportunity at each of the schools.
