Lil Wayne has mass appeal. It may be his "swagger", unique flow, or ability to make nonsense make sense. Probably a combination of those characteristics. Everyone wants a Wayne verse on their album. His lyrics are hit or miss ("I'm hot like light"?????), but usually says something ridiculous that keeps me listening. It's great that he consistently puts out new music. I enjoy his music, but I don't think he is the best rapper alive.

I think the two best mainstream rappers in recent years are Jay-Z and Lupe Fiasco. I can listen to American Gangster and The Cool straight through without skipping tracks. Their flow and lyrics are always on point. Jay-Z is definitely not a conscious rapper, but I like how he can rap about some generic subject matter and still make it interesting, somewhat reminiscent of Biggie. Lupe has arguably the best flow in the game and comes up with great concepts. I can always listen to those two.
