"I am hoping the well informed & more intelligent (than me) Ccers here can help to put it in perspective for me. My friend said she is stocking guns, ammo, food, water and gold and soap. She said she read somewhere (fema) say that soap becomes extremely valuable in an environmental or economic crisis. My friend has 4 degrees and is one of the most intelligent people I know so I am freaking a little here."

I have a friend that did this too. Bought a cabin in the woods, stocked it with gold, silver, steel and lead. 40 years ago. He uses it for camping from time to time. The end of the world as we know it never arrived.

I think disaster preparedness is good. Contingency plans are good. The folks that went through Katrina and Ike are certainly struggling. But to be totally consumed by paranoia is a little irrational. You run into a lot of folks like this in precious metals trading and you can fritter away a lot of your life waiting to be right on the end of the world.
