I agree, hmom. I think essays are very important (like ECs) once you have the stats because they provide perspective on the applicant as a writer and as a person. Sure, an essay (unless it is the best essay ever written) probably won't get someone with sub-par stats in, but for someone with mid-range or higher stats for the given school, the essay could very well be the thing that pushes them over the edge. It's also a great way to show passion...
