I know from my daughter's experience that it can make a difference in admission.
As for the piece, my daughter sent in a recording of a chamber music piece (but it was obvious when she was playing), and also a little solo piece. I think that whatever you are happy and confident playing will be fine. Perhaps your music teacher will help you choose! Good luck!
