At my daughter's high school, it would be no problem, because we have had a number of graduates attend the various SAs, so the administration may not be aware, or in some unfortunate cases, may not support, SA candidates. If your school does not have experience with the SA application process, I would suggest that your son put together an information packet for them, so they can see how important it is for your son to attend, to help him make an informed decision regarding attending a SA.
My other suggestion would be for your son to volunteer to take all of his exams early, before he leaves for the various seminars. If he is fully prepared to take his exams before he leaves, what harm would there be for him to miss the time? It may be necessary for his teachers to specially prepare exams for him, so you may want to acknowledge that cost, and your son may want to make a written statement that he will not divulge the contents of the exams to any of his classmates.
