I have not seen stats but I
have seen it happen. Sure, plenty of folks do it and don't get caught, and those who
are seem to be treated on a case-by-case basis. In other words, if the family seems truly clueless about the process and perhaps sent deposits to two schools because a financial aid appeal was still under way at one (or both?) of them, then they might get off the hook. But if it's clearly a "Junior-isn't-ready-to-decide-yet-because-he's-been-busy-with-baseball" situation, then both colleges could decide to pull the plug.
