Roughly 50% of the kids are from the midwest and around 12% are internationals. The remainder are primarily from the east and west coasts (not so much from the south). So, yes, I think applying from outside the midwest is a minor boost since the school is interested in raising their profile nationally. That said, rpo is correct that the applicants from outside the midwest are largely from major metro areas (no surprize) and the DC area is one place where they recruit.
