My kids don't have credit cards, at least not that I know about (or have co-signed). Both of them have worked since they were 15. They have bank accounts, debit cards, checkbooks, and so far that's been fine. There is the occasional call for parental assistance with large purchases, but that's OK, too. Neither of them has ever asked about getting a credit card. If they had, I probably would have thought it would be a good idea, but they haven't.
I think they have their own credit ratings based on their leases, utilities, etc.
