my dad was the exact same way, i was applying to the top LACs and he frankly would not let me apply to any school below the top 20s LACs and Dartmouth. My counselor helped me find safeties and I applied to them anyway despite his opinions. Even though I had good stats it was a competitive year and I didn't want to be stuck without a school come May.
