I have to agree with most here. Your parents' frame of reference may be out of date and they may not understand how hyper-competitive the admissions process is now. It is also difficult, as a parent, to seperate your own ego from your kid in the college selection process. You seem to have a very reasonable approach to safeties, and you should follow through -- even if you have to apply on the sly.
