I think you have to be careful about when you say you go to MIT, no matter your gender or the situation. If the response is "Wow, you must be smart," that's a big old awkward conversation-ender.
But, in my experience, it's a totally different situation to say you went to MIT when you're talking with other recruits at a PhD recruitment weekend versus saying you went to MIT when you're trying to make small talk while someone's cutting your hair. It's fine to say you go to MIT when it's relevant. But when it's not, it will look like you're bragging.
