I was in your situation last year (new state, knew absolutely no one at my school). It took a little bit to find exactly the people I really wanted to hang out with - at first, your friends might change quite a bit as you figure out what you are looking for in your friendships. But if you are easily adaptable it really isn't too difficult at all to find your place. Don't give yourself time to be homesick/bored - keep talking to everyone, introduce yourself, leave your dorm door open (when you are in your room) and people will be friendly. Your first semester in college especially is your transition period... it might be a little harder for you to find your niche right away than others. Just don't be afraid...everyone is in that awkward in-between stage at the beginning.
