I had four removed. I was not put to sleep. The dentist only numbed the gums. The first two or three days were uncomfortable because of the stitches in my gums. Also, the bottom sockets did not close up immediately and became infected. This was fixed by putting some medicated gauze down into the gums. The surprising thing was that I had absolutely no swelling.
The one weird thing that happened: the surgery was over in the afternoon. Late at night I got the hiccups for several hours. I've had problems with hiccups ever since and that was at least 5 years ago.
