Seems pretty atypical for me if the coach didn't even call you (which you don't mention) that they would even expect you to go out for the team. In fact, some DIII teams are pretty competitive, depending on your skill level you may or may not make the team. When D filled out the supplement, she at least got a call from the coach (not at Pomona, but other DIII schools).
