A friend played with the published list of CA NMSF, and sent me this analysis:

Quote:
Of 2,003 CA National Merit semi-finalists, 318 indicated an interest in Engineering. In this subset there were:

82 Female
196 Male
42 not determined

for a ratio of 2.3:1
Even at the top, there is a shortage of female engineers.

For the 74 indicating an interest in Computer Science, Computer Programming, Artificial Intelligence, or Computer and Information Sciences and support services:

12 Female
52 Male
10 not determined

for a ratio of 4.3:1

This is what California's technocratic class will look like 20 years hence:

739 East Asian (Chinese surname, but half-dozen possible countries of origin)
728 European (including Hispanic, Jewish, and Slavic)
198 South Asian (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh,...)
98 Korean
46 Eurasian (Persian, Armenian, Arabic, Turkish, ...)
54 South East Asian (Viet Namese, Philippino, Thai, Pacific Islander)
18 Japanese (could be Japanese nationals or 4th generation American)
1 Ghanian
1 Somali

126 undetermined (includes 37 with surname Lee)

Note: gender and ethnicity were inferred from student's firstname, lastname, and Google search
