UNC draws in more women for the same reason nearly all American colleges do at the moment, more women apply and are complicated, for complicated socio-economic reasons. With a few exceptions (like the very top places, way better than UNC), you can bet that if a college has a roughly equal ratio, they are making it that way by being harder on the female applicants.
There are a few Californians here, but not many. But don't worry, nobody gives a **** about California. In my experience, the people here who go on about California are the Californians. More than anyone else, they just won't shut up about home.
