Most engineering schools are large enough that missing class is manageable. Furthermore, engineering professors tend to convey the information so poorly that a student's time is better spent studying independently.
However, Cooper Union is known for its focus on undergraduate education, so I'd assume that its professors tend to be of higher quality and that classes are small enough that attendance is necessary.
