Thanks to all for your responses--very helpful!--and VT, thank you for such specific and helpful info. The physiological explanations make sense, and I appreciate the note about letting our ears be the guide. At this very early stage--he just had his third lesson--his teacher is still helping him discover his range and understand how correct breathing and support should feel. My son and I can hear the difference in pitch and tone when he's "getting it." Although he's applying to acting programs only, a few of them do include singing in the audition, so the time is right for him to start developing some understanding and technique. I feel reassured about the choice of a teacher. VT, we hope to attend both a visit day and production at your school later this spring--looking forward to seeing the place, about which I've read great things on CC!
