If your child has an iPhone, the app "find my iphone" will track it down if misplaced, and allow you (or your child) to remotely lock it, and even remotely wipe the data. It's a good idea to download it to the smartphone, and turn on location.
There's also a "find my iPad" app, but I don't think may BS students are toting around iPads. IPhones and laptops, yes. (or am I wrong?)
