Not only is it mandatory (at least for the BArch, you can stop with just a four year degree), it is probably the best part of the program. Imagine that after four years they set you up with a paid nine month internship with one of the top firms from around the world, with a good chance of being offered a permanent position after graduation. It is really a unique program. We are in Texas and seldom get any Rice students since so many of them are headed off to the offices where they did their preceptorships.
