Yes, I agree that kids who have not benefitted from any kind of engaged parenting do need a great deal more support in college. There is so much that must be relearned. "Homeless to Harvard" makes for a great soundbite, but perhaps a less fulfilling reality. This young woman has a great deal of unresolved (and no doubt justified) anger toward her parents. How will that affect her relationships with mentor figures, with college authority figures who might NOT be nurturing, or with roommates?
Will Harvard make sure she has peer mentors to whom she might be more receptive? Counselors? Tutoring? Community? I hope so.
I hope, too, that someone here follows this young woman's story and reports back in a year or two.
