Did you take a look at the layout of your 4 years in the performance program? Can you fit in the required course work for a double major? I would definitely do it if you can ONLY because it sounds like you are really interested in the engineering part. Forget what the friends say - it is your life. Not a cop out. Follow your own interests. Honestly - understanding the audio engineering can only add to your skills, even as a performance major.
