Taxguy, I am sorry. This is not unique to UC. We have come across this at a few schools. It is definitely better for merit aid at some schools not to take honors or Aps b/c at these schools all regular classes are treated equally to APs, and what hs you went to (ie: magnet vs. public hs where more than 30% do not go to college is irrelevant). It is simply amazing. At one school I inquired as to why, and I was told that the alumni decide who gets merit aid and it is done by a formula (sat and gpa regardless of regular vs. APs or type of hs). ECs at this school do not count for merit aid either. At this school it is best to go to a less competitive hs b/c you will fair better with aid as long as you have a decent sat score.
