Your son needs to be able to do things on his own with no special treatment, I know someone with ADD who has able to get a 4.0+ in HS along and will graduate from a major University Summa Cum Laude with a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science. He was able to do this with no medication, or special treatment. ADD shouldn't equate to special treatment.
