4 is probably the limit. 5 is overkill - after 4 letters I think they get the point. I did 3, and had the recommenders send them through the online form. They all told me it was really easy to do that way, and then you also don't have to worry about snail mail getting there on time (or even at all with the mess of paperwork the office must receive).
