Of course, Caltech's admissions is imperfect, as evidenced by the high percentage of students who transfer out. But it's impossible to tell who those students are, since the types of students who transfer out are usually academically qualified. Many of them just didn't know enough about their own personalities/learning styles to really know whether or not they would be able to tolerate the high levels of stress at caltech (seeing that there is no parallel in high school).
